As founder and publisher, Pam created the Kansas Free Press as a labor of love with the simple hope of improving the relevancy of journalism for everyday citizens.

By writing here about the places, people, policies and politics of Kansas, our citizen journalists hope to coax their neighbors into meaningful public conversations about what Kansans value - and how our communities, state and nation respond to those values.

Democracy rests upon the belief that common people, if they know the facts, will make wise and generous decisions - and will be able to participate in government and governing.

Even though the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution was written, mostly, to protect the liberties of everyday citizens and assure rights of everyday citizens to free speech and freedom of citizen-owned printing presses, still, throughout the decades, powerful groups in our democracy have worked through government to suppress information and ultimately to protect their own controls of power. In earlier days, citizen access to information was thwarted by governmental requirements that all printers had to have licenses. Sedition laws have also been used to punish (and unfairly silence) citizens for the expression of ideas, particularly when those expressions involved criticisms of those in power. Due to the asymmetry of power and influence, direct corporate or governmental control or influence over the presses remains a direct threat to democracy.

For the very survival of our democracy, everyday citizens will always need direct access to free presses.

Pam knows that without free speech and free access to truth, citizens simply cease being citizens.
