Alan is a former three-term Mayor of Salina, Kansas. In 2010, he was the Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress in Kansas' 1st District.
He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a BA in History, and has an MA in Comparative Literature from the University of South Carolina. Alan has also finished the coursework for a PhD in Spanish and Portuguese, and during his studies, lived four years in Latin America, principally in Guadalajara, Mexico, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Alan currently works in his family's furniture business, Jilka Furniture, in downtown Salina.
