voting-at-general-election-small-size-300px.jpgHAYS, Kan. - There's something about a Republican that brings out my chatty side.

For instance, what started today as a quick check of the day's news ended up with my giving in to the temptation to post a comment on The Republican Lawyer Blog.

His entry was entitled Rasmussen: 82% Say a Photo ID Should be Needed to Vote.

Blogger Matt Seurmann ended with the question, "Why not just make it a requirement to vote?"

I felt compelled to answer in the following manner. Here's why not...

HAYS, Kan. - I admit I am asking a somewhat provocative question. And I will not name any particular farm reporters because perhaps the most prominent one in Kansas has family roots in Ellis County, which means I am probably related to him. However, I will say that he has given quite a bit of air time recently to Bob Stallman, President of the American Farm Bureau Federation.

What's Wrong with This Picture?

HAYS, Kan. - I must be slow because I never noticed this before.

This past weekend I watched Saturday Night Live for the first time in a long time. I had stopped watching it after tiring of the show's rapid descent into third-grade bathroom humor when its stars didn't have vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin to spoof anymore. However, this weekend I was in for a pleasant surprise when the show returned to its former glory with a brilliant parody of "fair and balanced" Fox News. (Or Faux News, as some of us prefer to call it.)

HAYS, Kan. - My, oh my, oh my. Are the talking heads ever having a gabfest over President Barack Obama's proposed new budget. But I look at it this way. It took President George W. Bush eight years to tax-cut and spend us into this giant hole we're in, and it'll take the current President eight years to tax and save us out of it. And he won't win any popularity contests in the process.

The Culture Wars, Uncle Myron, and Me

HAYS, Kan. - Some of the chain e-mails that go around the internet annoy me even more than those telemarketing calls that come during the dinner hour. You know the kind I mean--not the e-mails promising rock-bottom prices on male enhancement products, but the chilling threats of imminent Armageddon all because Mom, apple pie, and God-fearing, democracy-loving Americans are once again under attack--usually by liberals or atheists or Democrats or gays or Muslims or, worst of all, by liberal atheistic Democratic gay Muslims.

These e-mails are usually forwarded to you and 938 other idiots who were dumb enough to give your e-mail addresses to Uncle Myron, who never met a conspiracy theory he didn't like. Or, for that matter, one he didn't think everyone in his address book should know about.

HAYS, Kan. - Psssst, we're surrounded.

I am talking to residents of Central Kansas. We're surrounded by radio stations and
talk show hosts that, in my opinion, generate too much heat and too little light when addressing matters of general public concern.
