Thankless Wretches

Diane, Diane, Diane

You should be grateful for the crumbs falling from the table of the rich!

Yippee! I'm in the 1%!

Poor Charles Koch. He wants to help all us unenlightened Americans who, if we just follow his path to wealth, would be almost as well off as he is. Or is that what he really wants? It's difficult to know for sure what he wants, given the message in the ad he just produced. One thing he wants us to know is that if we earn some $35,000 a year, we are in the top 1% of the world's earners. According to him, that makes us rich. My husband and I bring in about that much with our combined Social Security and my KPERS pension, all of which we earned by working from the time we were kids until we retired a few years ago. We do okay, but our income is nothing like the 43 billion dollars Charles Koch is worth.

Prejudice/Segregation

I just read a letter to the editor from Mark McCormick. I was working at Boeing Airplane Company when the Dockum sit in took place. 1958 ! Wow, has it been that long ago?

The Civil War and emancipation was a century old, but true emancipation certainly hadn't been realized by a large segment of society. I grew up in NW Kansas, where there were very few exposures to anyone but 2nd or 3rd generation white folks with European ancestory. I had no reason to be prejudiced toward any ethnicity. The colored folks had just barely begun integrating into National Sports and colleges were not integrated to any degree. When you talked to most church people they would tell you there was no racial prejudice in our community. But, it wasn't until the late 1950s that a colored person could spend the night within the city limits of Colby. I guess us church folks weren't aware of the realities facing some folks in society. We didn't have a problem, so nobody had any problems?
