Currently, the State of Kansas is involved in several lawsuits related to the recent omnibus abortion bill and earlier bills passed by the Kansas Legislature and signed by Gov. Sam Brownback, according to a recent Lawrence Journal-World article. One suit was filed by Planned Parenthood on June 21, 2013. The other was filed the following day, June 22, 2013, by Dr. Herbert Hodes and Dr. Traci Nauser, his daughter. They own and operate a clinic in Overland Park, Kansas. This lawsuit has to do with equal protection under the law, as the bill denies abortion providers the right to take tax deductions on services, as well as prevents providers from disseminating sex education material to public schools. The earlier lawsuit relates to health and safety regulations that only clinics that provide abortions have to follow.

Jessica Valenti has come on board The Nation magazine to fill in for Katha Pollitt as the feminist columnist while Pollitt is on leave to write a book. I've found reading Valenti's columns thought-provoking and insightful. She often takes stances on issues that most other writers wouldn't have the courage to take. She's considered one of today's leading feminists, even though I will admit until she appeared in The Nation, I hadn't heard of her. This is my failing, not hers, as I haven't kept up with what's going on with feminism around the country. We who live in Kansas have our hands full with a legislature and governor who want to take women back to the 1950s, or their version of the 1950s, which existed only in some ad man's imagination.
