EMPORIA, Kan. - Wichita Congressional Representative, Mike Pompeo, today proposed cutting 45 million dollars for alternative energy vehicle research (essentially rolling back spending to 2007 or 2008 budget levels depending on who's counting).
Mr. Pompeo believes the funds are part of President Obama's "liberal agenda" to have bureaucrats in Washington dictate the free market through the improper application of funding and tax credits.
Hmm, wonder what Mr. Pompeo would say about subsidies to the oil industry which most Republicans have refused to cut despite record profits amid very high costs to the consumer for gasoline...
Seems that Mr. Pompeo has also touted on his website this week that he sent a letter to the House leadership balking at the President's proposal to end the preferential tax treatment in accelerated depreciation for buyers of corporate business jets. Really Mr. Pompeo?
In a related measure proposed on the same evening, July 11th, there was a bipartisan proposal for restoring funding (220 million) to the Emergency Weatherizaton Program at the expense of cutting nuclear weapons funding increase. Essentially, the funding changes would keep the funding in both programs the energy weatherization and nuclear programs at 2011 levels.
The various weatherization programs pay back as much as 11-1 according to Republican Charlie Bass of New Hampshire!
People of Kansas - do you realize what your representatives in Congress are doing with your money! I personally have a client who benefit from the weatherization program this spring who is 84 years old and was spending $500 per month to heat her home this past winter.
Pompeo is wrong on this issue and the Republicans are wrong to favor nuclear weapons that are artifacts of a bygone Cold War over the demonstrated need to modernize our economy and get the USA out of the business of funding Middle East dictators and oil cartels.
