WICHITA, Kan. - Dolores & the Picken' Fritter with Henry Harvey will kick off the afternoon's festivities at noon at the Peace Picnic this Memorial Day, May 31, 2010, at Riverside Park in Wichita.
The Peace Picnic, organized by the Peace and Social Center of South Central Kansas and People of Faith for Peace, both Wichita-based peace organizations, has been an annual event for several years. The picnic provides a time and place for people working for peace to meet, socialize, relax, and think about a peaceful world.
Entertainment includes music, a moonwalk, and face painting. In addition to Dolores & the Picken' Fritter with Henry Harvey, other musical entertainment will feature Aaron Fowler, Laura Dugan and sons Paul, Justin, and Scott Fowler. The Friends University Jazz Combo will also perform.
One highlight of the afternoon will be the presentation of the Peace Essay and Art Challenge Experience awards. P.E.A.C.E., an annual challenge sponsored by the Peace Center, allows area students a chance to develop a peace-based theme through writing and art. This year, Geneva Hershberger, Earhart Environmental Elementary Magnet School teacher, will present the awards.
Wichita peace and social service organizations will have booths set up with information available for picnickers.
In case of rain, the picnic will be moved to basement of the First Church of the Brethren, 10th and Jefferson, Wichita.
