LAWRENCE, Kan. - Connie Schultz, nationally syndicated columnist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, will give this year's lecture for the Jana Mackey Distinguished Lecture Series, entitled "Words from the Heart: Gender, Justice and Advocacy" on Wednesday, April 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas.
"We selected Connie Schultz to be this year's speaker because of her dedication to issues of concern to Jana," said Kathy Rose-Mockry, chair of the Jana Mackey Distinguished Lecture Series board. "Connie has spent her career fighting for the same causes Jana did--women's rights, equality, social justice and serving others."
The Jana Mackey Distinguished Lecture Series was established in 2009 to commemorate late women's rights activist and KU law student Jana Lynne Mackey.
Mackey, 25, was found dead in her ex-boyfriend's home on July 3, 2008. At KU, Mackey was a second year law student and an active member of the Commission on the Status of Women. Dedicated to promoting equality for women, Mackey volunteered for GaDuGi SafeCenter, as a lobbyist in Kansas for the National Organization of Women, and on several political campaigns. She received a bachelor's degree in women's studies from KU in 2004.
Schultz, a bi-weekly columnist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Creators Syndicate, won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 2005. Her other awards include the Scripps-Howard National Journalism Award, the National Headliners Award, the James Batten Medal, and the Robert F. Kennedy Award for social-justice reporting. She is also the author of two books, ...And His Lovely Wife: A Memoir from the Woman and 'Life Happens...And Other Unavoidable Truths.
The Jana Mackey Distinguished Lecture Series is sponsored by the Emily Taylor Women's Resource Center in collaboration with eight KU entities: School of Law; Dole Institute of Politics; William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Media; Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies; Student Involvement and Leadership Center; Office of Multicultural Affairs; Commission on the Status of Women; Student Bar Association; and two community organizations: GaDuGi SafeCenter and Willow Domestic Violence Center. The 2010 Jana Mackey Lecture Series is made possible in part through the generous support of Coca Cola, the Multicultural Education Fund at KU, and Jana's parents, Christie and Curt Brungardt.
The program is free and open to the public. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The Dole Institute is located on KU's west campus, next to the Lied Center.
