On April 1st, the Kansas Free Press will mark its 6-month anniversary. With gratitude for the Kansans who nobly commit their time and talents to citizen journalism, we are celebrating our upcoming half-year anniversary by proudly showcasing each of our writers.
WICHITA, Kan. - Today, we proudly introduce KFP correspondent, Vickie Sandell Stangl. A resident of Andover, Kansas, Vickie is a lecturer at Wichita State University in the political science department. Her areas of expertise include women in politics, the U.S. Constitution, the Freethought Movement and separation of church and state, among others. Vickie is also interested in history and western philosophy.
She's been active in politics most of her life. She once served as legislative aide to Delegate Robert Washington in the Virginia General Assembly. More recently, she served as faculty adviser for the WSU College Democrats.
Vickie attained a B.S. in history from Iowa State University and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Wichita State University. She has previously served as continuing education instructor at Johnson County Community College and as political science instructor at WSU. A certified teacher, Vickie has also taught secondary education in history.
A talented writer, she authored the one-act play "Before Xena There was Elizabeth Cady Stanton." The play was historical fiction based upon the writings, letters and autobiography of Elizabeth Cady Stanton comprising three critical periods of her life and times representing the years 1815 to 1900. It was first performed at the Weston Crown Center in 1998 for the National Coalition for Sex Equity in Education Convention, Kansas City, Missouri.
She's been the recipient of numerous awards, including first place in 2003 at the Kan Film Festival, Open Division Documentary, for "Who Owns a Woman?" Vickie was named outstanding volunteer 1987 and received a 1984 Distinguished Volunteer Service Award from Johnson County Coalition for the Prevention of Child Abuse.
Vickie has often been tapped to serve in community roles or to assist with grassroots organizations. She has served as member of the board and one term as president of the Johnson County League of Women Voters, on the board of trustees at Oxford Park Academy, as committee member of the 85th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment Celebration, and as co-moderator and committee member for the Sunshine Kansas forum, as board member with Ballet Wichita. She also has served as a board member and vice president of education of the Johnson County Coalition for the Prevention of Child Abuse.
Currently, Vickie is president of a new group in Wichita, the Great Plains Chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. Vickie remains active in the League of Women Voters of Wichita-Metro, N.O.W. of Kansas, the Council for Secular Humanism and Phi Kappa Phi.
In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, including her sons and daughter. Vickie enjoys books on history, politics, philosophy and good poetry.
