"Kansas needs strong leadership - now. Holland can provide that, without the political baggage his opponent carries." - Baldwin City Signal
TOPEKA, Kan. - After months of speculation about who would compete against Sam Brownback, Wednesday brought good news for the Kansas Democratic Party when Tom Holland announced his candidacy for governor. Already, endorsements are rolling in.
"Tom has what it takes to be a great governor and I fully support him. Governors are CEOs of their states and as a successful small business owner, Tom's experience in balancing the books and getting the most out of every penny is exactly what Kansas needs," Governor Mark Parkinson explained.
Holland's name recognition may not yet be as widespread in Kansas, when compared with Brownback, but as Kansans learn more about Holland's experience, they are likely to find him a worthy and impressive candidate for the job of governor.
Kansas Lt. Governor Troy Findley endorsed Holland in this way, "Tom's the real deal and he can win this election. Tom appeals to Republicans, Democrats, Independents and first-time voters. He hasn't been in Washington for 16 years, he's been here - building a business, raising his family and serving his community. Tom knows that at the end of the day we can't balance our budget by destroying schools and emptying our small towns. For voters looking for a moderate, down-to-earth name on the ballot this year - that name is Tom Holland."
Those that know him best are those that have worked with Holland in the Kansas legislature.
Senate Democratic Leader Anthony Hensley said, "Tom Holland is an independent voice for the people of Kansas. He is a true problem solver, has all of the right credentials and is running for all of the right reasons. The people of Kansas need a leader who will bring people together to work for Kansans not a Washington politician like Sam Brownback who will divide our state and use the Governor's office as a stepping stone to higher political ambitions. I believe Tom Holland is the right person for the job of Kansas Governor and I stand behind him as he launches his campaign."
House Democratic Leader Paul Davis added his endorsement by stating, "No one will work harder in this election cycle - or for Kansas - than Tom Holland. Faced with a devastating budget crisis, we need a governor who will be at work early and stay late fighting for Kansas families. This is not the type of work ethic Sam Brownback has ever demonstrated amid his perpetual campaigns for higher office. In fact, Senator Brownback's attendance record in the United States Senate is downright embarrassing."
Baldwin City is Tom Holland's home town. The Baldwin City Signal was quick to offer its endorsement of Holland in an editorial, We will back Tom Holland,
"Brownback has far more name recognition after 16 years in Washington and he has a sizable war chest of campaign funds. But he's not held in the highest regard among many Kansans, especially those of us in the eastern part of the state.
"Holland also has a history of beating the odds. When he walked in our office in 2002 to announce he was running against incumbent State Rep. Ralph Tanner, who was in his fourth term and well established, we didn't give Holland much of a chance. He won.
"In 2008, Holland did it again, ousting Republican State Sen. Roger Pine, who was also heavily favored to gain re-election.
"Since 2002, we've gotten to know Holland well. He's done a good job of representing the people in both his roles. We've been proud to call him one of our own.
"We don't make a habit of endorsing candidates, but we'll make an exception for this race. Kansas needs strong leadership -- now. Holland can provide that, without the political baggage his opponent carries.
"But we know it's going to be a tough campaign. If anyone can do it, Tom Holland can."
Governor Mark Parkinson added, "Governors cannot govern on politics; they cannot bring our state together if they are focused on pushing people to the political extremes. That's why Tom is the right person at the right time; his pragmatic, common sense leadership is the better choice this election."
